Holmes Chapel Parish Council has written to our MP Sarah Russell to express our deep concern over the proposed withdrawal of funding for the e-MERLIN facility at Jodrell Bank.

As one of our area's most iconic landmarks and a world-renowned centre for scientific research, we believe Jodrell Bank deserves a secure future.

Please see a copy of our letter below:

'Holmes Chapel Parish Council is writing to express its deep concern regarding the decision to withdraw funding for the e-MERLIN radio astronomy facility at Jodrell Bank from March 2028.

For more than 80 years, Jodrell Bank has formed part of the landscape and identity of our local community. The iconic Lovell Telescope is not only recognised around the world as a symbol of British scientific achievement but is also an enduring landmark for residents across Cheshire. Generations have grown up with the telescope as part of their daily lives, inspiring curiosity, innovation and pride in our local area.

As a UNESCO World Heritage Site and internationally renowned centre for scientific research, Jodrell Bank makes an invaluable contribution to astronomy, education, tourism and the local economy. The potential loss of funding for e-MERLIN places this internationally significant work at risk and threatens the future of one of the United Kingdom's most important scientific assets.

Holmes Chapel Parish Council therefore wishes to record our strong support for all efforts being made to secure a sustainable funding solution. We urge the Government, UK Research and Innovation, and all those involved to work collaboratively to ensure that the scientific research undertaken at Jodrell Bank, together with the future of the Lovell Telescope and the e-MERLIN facility, is protected for generations to come.

We are grateful for the work that you are undertaking to highlight this issue and to advocate for the future of Jodrell Bank. Holmes Chapel Parish Council is pleased to add its voice in support of this campaign.

We hope that every effort will be made to secure the long-term future of this remarkable institution, ensuring that Jodrell Bank continues to inspire future generations and remains at the forefront of scientific discovery for decades to come.'

We would also encourage residents to support Jodrell Bank. There is a petition currently underway that you can sign by clicking the following link:
